Salt On My Tongue is a film essay dedicated to my grandmother. Although we didn’t share a common language, in the video I attempt baking an orange cake my grandmother made for special occasions as a way to connect. The baking is interrupted by stop motion animations whereby the cake ingredients begin to come alive in a non-verbal language. An atmospheric soundtrack was recorded with oranges and other household objects. What starts as a personal endeavour to remember, turns into a complex process of connecting with my grandmother’s communist history and her past as a partisan in the Greek Civil War. The video explores my Greek heritage and simultaneously offers an opportunity to reflect on how food connects us to people and culture. The film looks at the fluid concept of selfhood, womanhood and the role food plays in the construction of belonging.
Salt On My Tongue was produced by Yvonne Buchheim as part of the residency at MMAG, Amman, Jordan and with the support of Food Culture Days 2018, Vevey, Switzerland. |
