Stop Motion Film
2013 - 2015
The piece emerged from my rediscovery of a forgotten cache of 7,659 photographs taken after moving from the UK to Cairo in 2012. The photographs reflect my struggle to adjust to a new home and the distinct gap between private and public that the move brought with it. I witnessed a society in transformation but, as an outsider, I felt out of my depth and isolated. I turned inward. Consequently, over a period of two years,
I photographed myself repeatedly while remaining unsure of the purpose or meaning of the images.
In 2015, I looked at these photographs with different eyes. Observing my past documented self invited a process of reflection on memory, belonging and the sense of self within crisis.
Speak, Memory was produced by Yvonne Buchheim
with the support of Spring Sessions, Amman, Jordan in 2015.
